North Atlantic Treaty Organization

A military alliance between 30 North American and European countries established after World War II. NATO constitutes a system of collective defense whereby its member states agree to mutual defense in response to an attack by an external party promoting democratic values and enabling members to consult and cooperate on defense and security issues.
