Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species

An international agreement between governments that aims to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival. CITES establishes a legal framework for regulating trade in endangered species provides various levels of protection for more than 35000 species and requires permits for international movement of protected plants and animals.
